Artist statement

My work expresses anxiety. I am an individual, who amongst many others, struggle with past experiences in the present. Verbalizing feelings of angst visually has been a way for me to communicate. Disfigured bodies, worm like entrails, and decayed forms are constantly repeated through out my work. Each motif convey a sense of being overwhelmed, vulnerable, and discomfort. These ideas are explored through a combination of drawing, painting, collaging and printmaking.

My current work is focused on amplifying the feeling of anxiety by enlarging the scale of the figures and creating even more detailed intestine like forms. The water colored fleshy toned figures are drawn life sized, its huddled body hovering over anything within distance. All the while collaged entrails erupt from its head, flowing, stretching, and seemingly searching for another victim to intrude. Large sheets of tracing paper are violated with the worm like forms. They are meticulously drawn with ink, their condensed black forms appear to slowly dominate the paper. The act of collaging and drawing over these fragile like forms depict the frightening overwhelming sensation anxiety can have over me.

The images are made to illustrate the physical and psychological “harms” of anxiety. But an important aspect is the process to creating these images. The process of the almost obsessive redrawn entities or the continuous layering paper or paint over figures allows for a therapeutic release. Which ultimately enables me to express those frustrations visually.
